washington d.c.

I am in Washington D.C. for the weekend, hence the non-postage. Theodore and I are celebrating our 4 year anniversary! Pretty exciting! We took a trip to Baltimore yesterday..roamed around Fells Point, then went to the Inner Harbor and the aquarium. Much fun was had! Oh!! and it snowed!!!! :)
Today I wandered around Georgetown while he had an event to go to. We met up for lunch at this cute French restaurant, very tasty. After hearing that Madame Tussaud's had $10 tickets, we decided to go there, since neither one of us had ever been to one. It was fun and a little bit creepy. Wonderful pictures to come. We got back to our side of town and ate dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant, Cactus Cantina. Yum, yum, yum! They have the best chips and flour tortillas! nom! Anywho... I'll probably have a more meaningful post Monday or Tuesday night, so until then...

megan auman.

I came across Megan Auman's work today. It is very beautiful. I love the juxtaposition of organic and industrial. Her work explores images in textiles, such as floral designs. She uses steel along with accents of fine silver. I'm really drawn to the dark lines of the steel with little droplets of fine silver that really stand out. Check her out!

embroidery.

So, I think I'm going to start embroidering a lot more when I finish up with school. Two of my projects I am working on right now feature some embroidery, which is nice, but I want to do some serious embroidery (PORTRAITS!!!). It is really therapeutic for me. I can work on the stuff pretty much anywhere, which is quite nice.
Metal can be very stressful for me and that may have something to do with the fact that I must be in the school studio to work on stuff, and I don't really feel all that comfortable in there anymore. I don't feel like I have a place in that building this semester since I'm only taking one studio. I'm hoping that once I get a torch kit set up...wherever I will be, that I will be more relaxed when it comes to metal. I have so many ideas of things I want to do, but I can't get motivated to get into that studio.

Anywho, as soon as I get some batteries for my camera, I will take some shots of my works in progress!

From Lark Books website:
Jewelry Design Challenge: 30-Minute Earrings
Editor: Marthe Le Van
Entry Deadline: January 26, 2009

Are you a skilled and imaginative jewelry designer who is up for a challenge? Great! Your mission is to design a pair of earrings that can be made in 30 minutes flat.

30-Minute Earrings will showcase more than 50 incredibly stylish step-by-step projects that can be created without investing too much of a valuable commodity—time! The selected earring designs will be modern and sophisticated and encompass many different styles and techniques. The common denominator will be fast projects that look terrific!

PS: In 30-Minute Earrings, we won’t be teaching fundamental jewelry making techniques. Designers can assume that their readers are already proficient (and quick!) at skills such as sawing, soldering, and finishing.

Accept the challenge! Download an entry form here.

organic.

I came across Beth Cyr's jewelry while browsing through some other blogs today. Her work is organic and very beautiful. I really love the textures she uses as well as her techniques for setting stones. Go check out her stuff! I am in love with this necklace:
